This Year's Theme: "Winter CAAARRRnival 2023: Shiver Me Timbers!"

Ahoy, me hearties! This be the 113th Carnival in Dartmouth's history and we be takin' no prisoners! Hoist the Jolly Roger and get ready to set sail for an adventure on the high freeze as we prepare to celebrate "Winter CAAARRRnival 2023: Shiver Me Timbers!" We be transformin' Hanover into a pirates' paradise complete with treasure hunts, swashbuckling adventures, and a right bit of revelry.

Who be pickin' the theme?

The theme is selected annually by the students on the Winter Carnival Council. The council selects the theme as well as the winning poster and t-shirt designs, and plans and participates in all Winter Carnival events, which include the Opening Celebration, Polar Bear Swim, Ice Sculpture Contest, Human Dog Sled Races, Snowshoe Races and more.  Participation in Winter Carnival Council is open to all Dartmouth students. 8:00pm-9:00pm: DFSC Ice Skating Exhibition

Come out to Thompson Arena, the frozen sea, and support Dartmouth’s Figure Skating Club as they perform an exclusive exhibition just for Dartmouth students, faculty and staff!

ALL DAY: Free Ski Lift Ticket for undergraduate students at Dartmouth Skiway!

6:30pm: Carnival Opening Celebration

Set sail to the start of Winter Carnival and batten down the hatches for the venture ahead! Learn about all of this year's events from the Winter Carnival Co-Chairs. Great merriment to be had featuring The Cords, The Decibelles, The Sings, Fusion, and Ujima. It'll be a jolly time hosted by the Winter Carnival Council with pirate snacks, treasure, and a photo booth.

9:00pm: CGB presents Thursday Trivia - Pirate Edition

Bring yourself, and up to 5 of your crew mates for trivia in One Wheelock. Test if you and your mighty fine crew are landlubbers or old salts to knowledge. Could you possibly bring back the treasure? Pirate's booty will consist of Winter Carnival prizes, gift cards, and more!

11:00am-2:00pm: Print a Letterpress Carnival Poster

You've got the official Winter Carnival Poster - but did you know you can print a SPECIAL edition poster of your own right here on campus? Stop by the Book Arts Workshop in the basement of Baker to try out the letterpress machines!

1:00pm-4:00pm: Baker Library Tower Tours

Want a view from Dartmouth's crow's nest? To set sail on this adventure, arrive early as tours fill up within the first 15 minutes. Students wishing to go up to the tower are encouraged to come at the beginning of the scheduled time.

2:00pm-4:30pm: Polar Bear Swim

Walk the plank into the cold waters of Occom for this traditional Winter Carnival event.
Location: Occom Pond

2:00pm-5:00pm: Cookies and Cocoa

Warm up after a cold dip in Occom Pond!
Location: The Roth Center for Jewish Life - 5 Occom Ridge (white building behind the Choates)

3:00pm: Women’s Hockey vs St. Lawrence University

Location: Thompson Arena

3:00pm-9:00pm: Ice Sculpture Carving

Check out the works in progress by our student artisans as they chip away at their designs.

4:00pm-7:00pm: Parrot Origami at The Hood

Come over to The Hood Museum of Art and learn to fold a pirate’s best mate, parrots. Get into the Winter Carnival theme at The Hood!

4:30pm-8:30pm: Pirate's Dinner at FoCo

Chart yer course to ‘53 Commons for a special meal with your Dartmouth crew. Come hungry for a pirate’s feast!

9:00pm-1:00am Collis After Dark - Pirate Training Camp

Join Collis After Dark to become the pirate that campus needs! We’ll have activities to learn how to set sail on the high seas from knots to weather reading and even swashbuckling! Join us as we turn the belly of student life on campus into the belly of a ship!

More of a solo competitor? Throw on some snowshoes (we'll supply) and race for the treasure chest.

2:00pm-6:00pm: Swab the Decks! with Creative Gaming Club

Join the Creative Gaming Club in pirate themed board games and card games. Have a jolly time with these hearties in swabbing the decks!

See which crews and their sculptures win one of the awards being presented. See if your favorites get a share the pirate’s booty!

7:00pm: Film: THE PRINCESS BRIDE

Featuring the infamous Dread Pirate Roberts, the timeless romance of Buttercup and Westley is a sublime tale of true love and madcap adventure, powered by snappy, endlessly quotable dialogue.

10:00pm-1:00am: Collis After Dark presents Late Night Breakfast and Messages in a Bottle

Landlubber, looking for a hot meal? Looking to send a message to those you love for Valentine’s Day? Just want to watch a nice Pirate Movie with some food? Then join your favorite crew on the late night ship of Common Ground! We’ll have food, free valentine messages in a bottle for your love (even if it is just the sea), and a viewing of a pirate movie!

Sing some of the high seas famous shanties with us and David Coffin, an expert on the craft! We’ll have the lyrics and the spirit of the sea, bring your voice to be part of a wonderful chorus.
