Michigan: An American Portrait captures the history of the state and how that history informs the present. Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat (90 minutes)

Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat takes viewers into the heart of the fire service, and by extension on a journey through the many facets of America. Locations like California’s wine (and wildfire) country, a small Nebraska farming community, and an Orthodox Jewish enclave of New York set the backdrop for a series of stories about service, personal growth, and finding purpose. Together they convey the depth, diversity, and critical role fire departments play across the country.

Told through an unexpected cast of characters, the film challenges stereotypes and preconceptions at every turn. Barbara is a beloved grandma by day and a badass EMT by night. Madely, a Salvadoran immigrant, shows what teenagers are capable of when given the opportunity. For Jaime, the fire service saved his life, and he now wants to pass on his lessons and legacy to his sons and grandson. At a fragile and fractured point in our history, this film offers hope and optimism, and reminds us that we are all in this together.

Race to Alaska (98 minutes)

750 miles. Icy water. No motors. No support. Described as the Iditarod on a boat, with a chance of drowning or being eaten by a Grizzly bear, this epic endurance race attracts intrepid, unhinged characters who find their edge on this punishing course

Bearded Boys of Summer

The House of David is a religious group founded in Benton Harbor, Michigan in March 1903. In 1913 they started playing competitive baseball and they had a famous barnstorming baseball team that toured America from the 1920s through the 1950s. The team members rarely cut their hair or shaved and used baseball to share their religious beliefs. The baseball team is the most sought-after subject of the House of David’s story because it touched the major league, minor league, and Negro League baseball worlds.
