Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

For more information or to register online for the programs listed here, visit JCPRD.com/Register and complete a search for any of the activity numbers listed below. To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Aug 7-13

Aug. 7 - Evening in the Park (All Ages)

Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, 6 to 10 p.m., FREE

Plan to attend a free outdoor concert of big brass music followed by a showing of a movie on a Sunday evening in early August. This year’s Evening in the Park event will include a 1.5 hour concert by Grand Marquis, a jazz and blues band. After the concert, the movie “The Princess and the Frog,” (Rated G) will be shown. This now annual event is intended as a "thank you" for the community’s ongoing support of JCPRD’s parks, programs, and special events!

Aug. 7 - Summer season ends at Shawnee Mission Park Marina & Beach, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, and Aug. 5 at Kill Creek Park Beach & Marina, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe (All Ages)

Hours, rentals, and admission fees vary;  also Shawnee Mission Park Marina open Saturday and Sundays through Sept. 5.

Capacity limits have been lifted and patrons can walk up to the facilities, although reservations are still recommended for the very busy Shawnee Mission Park Marina. Marinas offer boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. For more information about the marinas or beaches, follow these links.

Aug. 9 - Special Event: Gamin’ with the Grandkids (Ages 5 & Older with 50 & Older)

Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell, Overland Park, 1:30 to 3 p.m., $6 per person, $7 nonresidents

Soak up the last days of summer and enjoy an afternoon of back-to-school fun with icebreakers, four games of bingo, dance parties, and more! Light refreshments served. Activity number 21885.

Aug. 9 - Gardening: Virtual Gardening for Pollinators (Ages 18 & Older)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE 

What is that? How do I grow this? What should I put in my garden? What type of garden do I like? So many questions and no one to ask until now. Join the K-State Extension Office and be free to discuss your gardening questions with a Master Gardener. Activity number 21746.

Aug. 10 - Alzheimer's – Finance and Managing Money (All Ages)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE

Learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer's and dementia; how to approach someone about memory concerns; importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. Presentations by the Alzheimer's Association. Activity number 21840.

Aug. 10 - Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walk (Ages 1- 4 with an Adult)

Meadowbrook Park - Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $3 per person, $4 nonresidents

Explore the park with a group and find fun and tactile ways to interact along the way! Limit of two children per adult. Activity number 21932.

Aug. 11 - Social Outing: The Crown Experience (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., $25 per person, $27 nonresidents

Enjoy a day at beautiful Crown Center. Start the morning at Chips Chocolate Factory with a fudge making demonstration and samples. After the tour, it's off to shop the gold standard of shops such as, Halls, Hallmark, Crayola, various boutiques, and more. Pick where you dine in the food court or various restaurants in Crown Center. Later, tour the newly-renovated Hallmark Visitors Center. Activity number 21614. If this trip is full, please consider putting your name on the waitlist, as a second bus might be scheduled.

Aug 11 - Special Event: The Meet Up (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3 p.m., $15 per person, $16 nonresidents

Want to meet or add new friends to your contact list? Interactive games, hot topics, and trivia will have you up meeting fellow attendees and making new friends. Light appetizers will be served, and prizes given. Activity number 21659.

Aug. 12 deadline - play begins Sept. 10 - Fall Cubs Kickers (Ages 3-4)

Heritage Soccer Park, 17255 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe, Saturdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m. or 10 to 10:45 a.m., 6 sessions, $78 per person, $15 late fee after the deadline

Cubs Kickers is an entry-level soccer program that creates a safe and fun environment for children to learn the foundations of soccer and foster a love for the game. Program meets six Saturday mornings for 45-minute sessions. Puma FC coaches will lead the instruction. Program begins Sept. 10 with a registration deadline of Aug. 12. Late registrations will only be accepted if space is available and will be assessed a $15 late fee. T-shirt is included in the fee. Aug. 12 - Movies in the Park: “Clifford the Big Red Dog” (Rated PG)

Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, FREE thanks to the support of The Parks & Recreation Foundation of Johnson County, Arvest Bank, and JE Dunn

6th of 11 through Oct. 28 - When middle-schooler Emily Elizabeth meets a magical animal rescuer who gifts her a little, red puppy, she never anticipates waking up to find a giant ten-foot hound in her small New York City apartment. While her single mom is away for business, Emily and her fun but impulsive uncle Casey set out on an adventure.

Aug. 13 - Family Fun: Family Bingo - Back to School (All Ages)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 6 to 8 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents, $20% discount for additional participants

This is a great opportunity for the family to unplug and have fun together. We’ve added twists and special treats to make the game more active, silly, and a family night to remember! Pizza dinner served at 6 pm, bingo to follow. Activity number 21948. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo.

Aug. 13 - Fishing: Overnight Saturdays after 11 pm (All Ages)

Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 11 p.m. - 5 a.m., permit fees vary

After 11 p.m., the park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, trout permit if fishing for trout and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Aug. 13 - Special Events: Kill Creek Park Triathlon and Duathlon (Ages 11 & Older)

Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 7:30 to Noon, fees vary. NOTE: As a result of this event, Kill Creek Park will not open for public use until Noon on this date

The Kill Creek Park Coed Triathlon and Duathlon is the perfect race for both the new and experienced triathlete. Situating ourselves on the calendar as your “last hurrah,” we are the perfect race to cap off your season. The event is a Coed Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon with categories for Individuals, Athena/Clydesdale, and Relays. The 2022 Kill Creek Park Triathlon and Duathlon is a USA Triathlon sanctioned and Paratriathlon-friendly event.
