May 6 - Collaborative Seed Sculpture Workshop (All Ages)

Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 10 a.m. to Noon, FREE

NEW! Learn about Kill Creek prairie restoration and collaborate on a public art installation with artist and naturalist duo, Cydney Ross and Alix Daniel, who are the current artists in residence for JCPRD’s Art and Natural Resource Residency at Kill Creek Park. Using natural materials such as clay, stems, wood, cordage, and native prairie seeds, participants will make seed sculptures that contribute to this ephemeral, public art installation. Participants should wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes that they don't mind getting a little dirty! The use of reusable water bottles, sunscreen, bug spray, hat, and sunglasses are recommended. Click here to RSVP for this program.

May 6 - Guided Nature Walk (Ages 12 & Older)

Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 1 to 3 p.m., FREE

NEW! Spark your curiosity for the prairie with an enthusiastic conversation about art, native plants, and more with artist and naturalist duo, Cydney Ross and Alix Daniel who are the current artists in residence for JCPRD’s Art and Natural Resource Residency at Kill Creek Park. Join them for a leisurely nature walk through Kill Creek Prairie and learn more about ongoing prairie restoration efforts. We will view their recently installed public art piece and explore what is blooming across the prairie. Participants should wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and sturdy walking/hiking footwear. The use of reusable water bottles, sunscreen, bug spray, hat, and sunglasses are strongly encouraged. Click here to RSVP for this program.

May 12 registration deadline - games begin May 24 -  Softball: MAWSC Summer FP League (14U, 16U, & 18U)

Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Wednesdays with possible Tuesday overflow games, times vary, $795 per team  

This season for 14U-18U high school teams will run May 24 through June 28. Games will be played on Wednesdays with possible overflow on Tuesdays. The early bird deadline is May 5 and final deadline is May 12.

May 15, 17 - Yoga: Yoga Beyond Basics (Ages 14 & Older)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Mondays, 6:30 to 7:20 p.m., 4 sessions, $32 per person, $35 nonresidents, or Wednesdays, 6:30 to 7:20 p.m., 5 sessions, $40, $44 nonresidents

1st of a new season! MODERATE INTENSITY: Take a deep dive in the yoga experience where we move a little faster, work deeper into our poses, and explore breathing practices more deeply! Comfort in our basic yoga class required. Please bring water and a mat. Monday class, activity number 26302. 1st of a new season! LOW INTENSITY: Improve circulation, regulate your metabolism, and increase flexibility and coordination with this Yoga class. You will lengthen your muscles while increasing both muscle and bone density. Yoga participants of all levels are welcome. Join us for this class and find out all the benefits of yoga in your life. May 15, 19 - Gymnastics: Indoor Playground (Ages 1-5)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 11 a.m. to noon, $5 per person

1st of a new season! Indoor Playground incorporates fun-filled playtime with obstacle courses and play gym equipment. Children up to 5 years of age will have the opportunity to focus their energy while developing strength and agility. Parent/legal guardian will be asked to sign a waiver and an adult must be present with their child at all times. Activity number 28965.  Friday session on May 19, activity number 28965. May 16 - Special Interest: Developing Healthy Habits (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 10 to 11:30 a.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

NEW! Learn how to create new and sustainable goals, habits, and routines around nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and sleep so you can reach your health goals. Program presented by K-State Extension. Activity number 26841.

May 17 - Kansas City Symphony Concert in the Park (All Ages)

Kill Creek Park, Shelter #2, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 6 p.m., FREE

Musicians from the Kansas City Symphony will be performing neighborhood concerts in JCPRD parks, most with the symphony’s Mobile Music Box stage.  All events are weather permitting. 

May 17 - Exercise: Ageless Lifters (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Wednesdays, 1 to 1:50 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents 

Engage each muscle group in your entire body workout. This full body workout is achieved through high repetition sets and non-cardio exercises. This class uses dumbbells and body weight exercises. Activity number 26719.

May 17 - Art: Plein Air (Ages 50 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Wednesdays, 9 to 11:30 a.m., 6 sessions, $67 per person, $74 nonresidents

Explore the beauty of the outdoors at Antioch Park and learn how to translate it to paper or canvas by painting outdoors. Learn color mixing, light representation, and more. May 17 - Games: Bird is the Word Bingo (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $6 per person, $7 nonresidents

BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun, and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift certificates. Please pre-register at least one week in advance. Payment is required at time of registration. For the enjoyment of all participants, children are not permitted to attend 50 Plus Bingos. May 18 - Exercise: Strength and Stretching Virtual (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents

A stretching and strengthening class designed to increase strength and range of motion helping with activities of daily living. This class will take place on Zoom every Thursday. If you are unable to attend class at the scheduled time, you can request a link to watch the recorded class within seven days. Activity number 26777.

May 18 - Kansas City and the Power of the Railroad (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, , 6 to 7 p.m., $6.40 museum members, $8 non-members

Join Matthew Reeves from the Linda Hall Library as he explores Kansas City history through the lens of the railroad. From our immediate post-Civil War commercial boom to national prominence as the “Paris of the Plains,” Kansas City owes much of its good fortune to the power of the locomotive. Learn how railroads created and shaped the metro as illustrated by items from the Linda Hall Library’s collections. This program ties into the museum’s special exhibit, - "TRAINS: Transportation and the Transformation of Johnson County", which runs May 13 through Jan. 13. Activity number 29611.

May 19 - Art: Ceramics Date Night (Ages 16 & Older)

May 20 - Turkey Creek Festival featuring Creek Chic Arts and Crafts Market (All Ages)

Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch Road, Merriam, 10 am to 4 pm

Come join the fun!  The city of Merriam’s Turkey Creek Festival is an annual tradition in Antioch Park. This full day of family entertainment features free kids' activities, live music, 5k walk/run, food trucks, and so much more! As part of the event, JCPRD’s Creek Chic Arts and Crafts Market features local artists and makers. Discover handmade, vintage, and repurposed treasures as you explore the festival.
