Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Aug. 20-26:

Aug. 21 - Group Youth Swim Lessons (Ages 6 months & Older)

Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center, 17251 W. 87th St., Lenexa, Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 classes in six levels, beginning times vary, 8 sessions, $65 per child, $72 nonresidents

Afternoon and evening classes available. Lesson levels include: Preschool A, Preschool B, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. Most levels are assigned based on skill level rather than age. Aug. 22 - Cards: Bridge Workshops - When to Draw Trumps (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 6 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

Become an in-demand partner with these bridge workshops. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Workshops include handouts to take home. Activity number 26899.

Aug. 23 - Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walk (Ages 1-4 with an Adult)

Meadowbrook Park - Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents

Explore the park with a group and find fun and tactile ways to interact along the way! Limit of two children per adult. Activity number 26866.

Aug. 23 - Special Interest: Advanced Healthcare Directives (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 10  to 11 a.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

NEW! This class introduces the process and documents involved in preparing for one’s future medical care, should you become unable to speak for yourself. This class is presented by the K-State Research and Extension office. Activity number 26615.

Aug. 25 - Preschool: Little Hulas (Ages 2-5 with Adult)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents

Take a tropical trip to the clubhouse. Enjoy a morning of flowers, games, music, snacks, and a craft! Activity number 26889.

Aug. 25 - deadline - play begins Sept. 17 - Volleyball NCF Fall for individuals and teams (Grades 7 & 8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sunday evenings, 5 sessions, $83 per person, or $525 per team

Teams will practice one night a week at New Century Fieldhouse, in addition to their games on Sunday evening. If you volunteer to coach and are chosen to be a head coach, your child will receive 50% off their registration fees. Aug. 26 - Gymnastics: Indoor Open Gym (Ages 4-17)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., $6 per person

Head to Mill Creek Activity Center for 60 minutes of unstructured, supervised gym time on all gymnastics apparatuses, trampoline, and our loose foam pit. A great opportunity for program participants to safely work on skills outside of class! Activity number 29431. Call 913-826-2950 for more information.

Aug. 26 - Boating: Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail With Us! (Ages 18 & Older)

Shawnee Mission Park Marina Parking Lot, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, Noon to 1 p.m. FREE

Last session of 2023! All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join society members for lunch and sailing. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. Activity number 26469. For more information, call Nick Hockman at 913-268-5683.
