Johnson County Park and Recreation District Program Highlights - December 7, 2022

Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Dec 25-31.

Dec. 27-29 - Volleyball: Okun Winter Break Camp (Grades 3-8)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to Noon, 3 sessions, $65 per person, $72 nonresidents

Get some quality volleyball experience with Coach Gwenn Pike! Practice serving, passing, setting, and hitting in small group drills and scrimmage-like play. Participants will be divided into groups based on age and ability. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt. For more information, visit www.jcprd.com/youthsports. Activity number 23445.

Dec. 27-29 - Basketball: Okun Winter Break Camp  (Grades 4-8)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Thursday, 3 to 4:30 p.m., 3 sessions, $60 per person, $66 nonresidents)

Get in the game with JCPRD basketball camps at Okun Fieldhouse! Players will participate in drills, group activities, and scrimmages offering group and one-on-one instruction. Players will practice shooting, passing, ball handling, offense, and defense. Activity number is 23442For more information, contact Okun Fieldhouse at 913-826-2900.

Dec. 27, 28, 29, & 30 - Museum: Kids' Day Out (Ages 6-10)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $38 per person

Come have fun when school is out! Discover history through hands-on activities and exploration of KidScape and museum exhibits, play games, and enjoy down time. Bring a lunch, snacks, and water bottle and dress for the weather - we will go outside if we can. We are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you may drop off and pick up at any time. Five-year-old children can be enrolled if currently attending kindergarten. Dec. 27-30 - Computers: Animation Camp (Ages 9-17)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. - Noon, 4 sessions, $165 per person, $182 nonresidents

Students will learn the basics of animation and digital design. Students who enjoy going to various sites to see fun interactive animations will love this course. This class will utilize award winning animation software to develop fun, interactive animations that they can share with the world. No refunds after the first day of camp. Activity number 23522. Dec. 27-30 - Theatre: Broadway Belters Winter Break (Ages 8-12)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 4 sessions, $225 per person, $250 nonresidents

Be a triple threat! Young artists will stretch their acting, vocal, and dance skills with classic Broadway tunes. Each day they will get to explore a different show. Shows include “Matilda,” “Annie,” and “Hamilton,” just to name a few! Activity number 22658.

Dec 27-30 - Theatre: Oh the Places You'll Go PreK Camp (Ages 4-6)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, Tuesday through Friday, 4 sessions, $135 per person, $150 nonresidents

Join us for some Dr. Seuss inspired adventures! Each day participants will go on a story journey, make a Dr. Seuss inspired craft, and learn some music from the hit musical “Seussical.” Activity number 23722.

Dec. 27-30 - Computers: Robotic Battle Bots (Ages 9-15)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m., 4 sessions, $150 per person, $165 nonresidents

This course offers hands-on opportunities to build and program robots. Working in small teams, students will design robotics systems to compete in fun real-world activities. Each day will bring a new challenge, and your team's robot will have to morph to better adapt and compete. Students will compete in the battle bots competition at the end of the camp to prove their robot is the best. Dec. 27-29 - Volleyball: New Century Fieldhouse Winter Camp (Grades 3-8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Tuesday through Thursday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 3 sessions, $60 per person, $65 nonresidents

Get in the game by participating in this three-day winter break volleyball camp held at New Century Fieldhouse. Girls and boys in grades 3 - 8 can participate in the camp and will be split up into groups by grade and ability level as best as the coaches can. Serving, passing, setting, hitting, fun drills and games will all be covered during the course of the camp. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. Activity number 22757. Dec. 28 deadline - play begins Jan. 8 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Men’s Winter League (Ages 18 & Older)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sundays, times vary, 8 sessions, $650 per team

The winter league will consist of eight games. Games are played Sunday afternoon and evening. League play has five field players plus the goalie. Activity number 24149. For questions, call 913-826-2850.

Dec. 30 - Holiday Event: Ring in the New Year (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse,9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, Noon to 2:30 p.m., $17 per person, $19 nonresidents

Let’s celebrate the New Year! Enjoy musical entertainment by our very own Misty Town, six games of bingo, and lunch. Prizes can range from gift cards to gift baskets. Pre-registration is required. Activity number 23156.
