Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of March 5-11:

March 6 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older

Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy monthly session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices.  Activity number 24553. March 6 - Art: Inspiring Creativity Through Journaling (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, Mondays, 10 a.m. to Noon, 4 sessions, $80 per person, $88 nonresidents

NEW! Join in on this four-week exploration of the ways to use sketching and journaling to spark creative ideas. The only requirements are a sense of fun and wonder. Please bring 9 x 12 multimedia sketch pad, all other materials provided. Week One: What is Creativity? - Begin your art journey with introductions and group discussions, 30 sketches in 30 minutes, an art scavenger hunt, and more. Week Two: Color Basics & Still-Life - Learn about the color wheel and various color theories with a warm-up journal exercise, move into objects and still-life and conclude with a color stories project. Week Three: Landscapes & Cityscapes - Continue your art journey by exploring landscapes and cityscapes through various sketchbook exercises. Week Four: Space, Line & Shape - Complete with series by discovering positive and negative space and line drawings. Enjoy art creativity games to think outside of the box and see things in new ways. March 6, 7 (four separate classes) - Dance: 50 Plus Tap - Beginning, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, days, times vary (see below), 6 sessions, $48 per person, $53 nonresidents

Learn basic tap fundamentals such as the Waltz, Clog, and Rhythm Time Steps in Beginner Tap. Stomp, shuffle, and stamp your way to the next level with Intermediate. Test out of Intermediate for Advanced. Hard-soled or tap dance shoes required. No previous tap dance necessary for Beginner.

Three of these classes meet on Mondays starting March 6. They are: Beginning Tap offered from 1:15 to 2 p.m., activity number 24303; and the Intermediate class offered from 2 to 3 p.m., activity number 24305. Meeting Tuesdays beginning March 7 are: the Advanced class from 3 to 4 p.m., activity number  24307; and the Advanced Beginner class is offered from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., activity number 24310.

March 7 - Preschool Planetarium Programs: Sky Stories (Ages 3-5 with an Adult)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $5 per person

Blast off with your curious little astronaut as we explore planets, stars, and the wonders of space through stories in our new immersive portable planetarium. All children must be at least 3 years of age and accompanied by a paying adult. Program held indoors. Space is limited. All participants are seated on the floor. Activity number 24709.

March 7 - Gardening: Pruning Evergreens (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE 

Pruning evergreens is a little different than trimming other trees and shrubs. Horticulture Agent Dennis Patton on the K-State Extension Office will provide participants with the basics of pruning so they can enjoy decades of year-round color from these majestic plants. Improve your pruning confidence! Activity number 24288.

March 8 - Games: Virtual Scattergories® (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE

Think fast and write quicker in this fun and fast-paced game of alliterative words and categories!  Zoom link will be emailed the day prior to the program. Zoom information is also on the receipt notes. Activity number 24368.

March 8 - Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walk (Ages 1-4 with an Adult)

Meadowbrook Park - Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $3 per person, $4 nonresidents

Explore the park with a group and find fun and tactile ways to interact along the way! Limit of two children per adult. Activity number 24572.

March 8 deadline - play begins March 19 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Men’s Spring League (Ages 18 & Older)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sundays, times vary, 8 sessions, $650 per team

The spring league will consist of eight games. Games are played Sunday afternoon and evening. League play has five field players plus the goalie. Activity number 25810. For questions, call 913-826-2850.

March 8 - Alzheimer's - Healthy Living for the Brain and Body (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE

Learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer's and dementia; how to approach someone about memory concerns; importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. Presentations by the Alzheimer's Association. Activity number 24821.

March 8 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “Four Little Kittens” (All Ages)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members

Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! A craft activity is included after the story ends. In this Little Golden Book from 1957, four kittens become four different types of cats when they grow up--alley cat, ship's cat, farm cat, and house cat. Activity number 24528. March 9 - Lunch and Learn: LGBTQ 101 with Misty Town (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., $29 nonresidents, $31 nonresidents 

Have you heard acronyms like “LGBT” or LGBTQ” and ask yourself what does any of that mean? Do you feel you lack the skills needed to address concerns and questions? Gain a better understanding of current terminology such as, queer, pansexual, intersexed, gender fluid, and transgender. In addition, you will be learning about issues facing the LGBTQ community while having the opportunity to ask questions in a safe and non-judgmental space. Lunch will be served. Activity number 24811.

March 10 deadline - play begins April 1 - Fall Cubs Kickers (Ages 3-4)

Heritage Soccer Park, 17255 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe, Saturdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m. or 10 to 10:45 a.m., 6 sessions, $78 per person, $15 late fee after the deadline

Cubs Kickers is an entry-level soccer program that creates a safe and fun environment for children to learn the foundations of soccer and foster a love for the game. Program meets six Saturday mornings for 45-minute sessions. Puma FC coaches will lead the instruction.  Late registrations will only be accepted if space is available and will be assessed a $15 late fee. T-shirt is included in the fee. March 10 - Museum: Kids' Day Out (Ages 6-10)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $38 per person

Come have fun when school is out! Discover history through hands-on activities and exploration of KidScape and museum exhibits, play games, and enjoy down time. Bring a lunch, snacks, and water bottle and dress for the weather - we will go outside if we can. We are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you may drop off and pick up at any time. Five-year-old children can be enrolled if currently attending kindergarten. Activity number 24540. For program questions, call the museum, 913-715-2570.

March 10 - Preschool: Prince/Princess Tea Party (Ages 2-5 with Adult)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents 

NEW! Your youngster is cordially invited to our Princess and Prince Tea Party. Dress them in their best for music, dancing, games, tea, and cookies. Activity number 24792.

March 10 registration deadline, play begins Jan. 6 - Basketball: Okun Fieldhouse – Spring

(Leagues for Grades 1-12)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, times vary but will be weekday evenings, 6 games, for teams - the cost is $540 per team through March 3, or $590 until March 10, for individuals - the cost is $90 through March 3 and $100 through March 10

This season is open to recreational through competitive girl’s and boy’s teams. For more information, call 913-826-2900.

March 10 registration deadline, games begin April 2 - Volleyball: New Century Fieldhouse – Spring

(Leagues for Grades 3-8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sunday evenings, the cost is $630 per team through March 3, or $680 until March 10, for individuals - the cost is $98 through March 3 and $113 through March 10

Games are played on Sunday evenings, with practices taking place during the week. Teams will play six doubleheaders from April 2 through May 21.  No games played April 9.

March 11 - Art: Fairy House (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Saturdays, 10 a.m. to Noon, 2 sessions, $49.50 per person, $54 nonresidents

Make your own ceramic house for a fairy garden. You will learn hand-built ceramics and glazing techniques during this class. Activity number 23950.

March 11 - Lanesfield Historic Site - Open Hours (All Ages)

18745 S. Dillie Road, Edgerton, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, FREE

The limestone schoolhouse, the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield, is the oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County. Students attended from 1869 - 1963 when the school closed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The site today includes the original schoolhouse, four outbuildings, and a modern visitors center that houses the exhibit One-Room Schools in Kansas, a museum store, and restrooms.
