Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of July 30-Aug. 5:

July 31, Aug. 2 - Yoga: Yoga (Ages 14 & Older)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Mondays, 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents, or Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., 6 sessions, $48, $53 nonresidents

LOW INTENSITY: Improve circulation, regulate your metabolism, and increase flexibility and coordination with this yoga class. You will lengthen your muscles while increasing both muscle and bone density. Yoga participants of all levels are welcome. Join us for this class and find out all the benefits of yoga in your life. Activity number 26298. Wednesday class with same timeframe and 6 sessions with a cost of $48 per person or $53 for nonresidents, beginning Aug. 2, activity number 26300. July 31-Aug. 4 - Museum: History Geek Camp (Ages 13-16)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 5 sessions, $200 per person, $160 for museum members

Calling all history geeks! During this unique week-long camp, young historians will explore all the museum spaces - including the ones off-limit to the public! Campers will learn about all the things that go on behind the scenes in a museum and even take on the role of a curator to create a display for the museum. Activity number 25794.
 
July 31-Aug. 4 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Bike Adventure Camp (Ages 5-10)

Heritage Park, 16000 S. Pflumm Road, Olathe, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for kids who are ready to crank out bike adventures and improve safe riding skills on wide multi-use trails and low traffic neighborhood streets. Riding adventures away from base camp will highlight with distances varying by ability level each day (children grouped by ability level)! Bike skills taught include: brake modulation, emergency braking, steering in control, riding in a group, riding up and down hills, traffic safety, and yielding to other trail users. Super fun on-the-bike and off-the-bike games and craft activities round out the week. This camp is all about safety and fun on two wheels! No training wheels allowed. Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25074.

July 31-Aug. 4 - Buddy Pegs: Learn to Pedal (Ages 5-10)

Heritage Park, Shelter #5, 16000 S. Pflumm Road, Olathe, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for kids who are not yet on two wheels (without the aid of training wheels). Even though some children start the week nervous, most campers will be pedaling confidently on their own by day two, thanks to our compassionate, patient, and FUN coaches. This camp is run by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who will ensure all kids individually progress in their skills and double their excitement for biking throughout the week! Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25053.
 
Aug. 1 - Movies in the Park: “Trolls World Tour” (Rated G)

Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, $1 per person

Poppy and Branch discover that there are six different troll tribes scattered over six different lands. Each tribe is also devoted to six different kinds of music -- funk, country, techno, classical, pop, and rock. When rockers Queen Barb and King Thrash set out to destroy the other music, Poppy and Branch embark on a daring mission to unite the trolls and save the diverse melodies from becoming extinct. Aug. 1 - Gardening: Coffee and Gardening Conversation (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE

Building friendships with varied garden conversation while sipping your favorite tea or coffee or hot cocoa. Shorten your learning curve by learning from each other. Activity number 26878.

Aug. 1 & 2 - Exercise: Tai Chi (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park City Hall - 4600 W. 51st St, Roeland Park, Tuesdays, 5 to 5:50 p.m. or Wednesdays, 10 to 10:50 a.m., 4 sessions, $38 per person, $42 nonresidents

LOW INTENSITY: Tai Chi offers a slow and gentle exercise with benefits in endurance, flexibility, and muscle strengthening. All experience levels welcome in this course. Tuesday class activity number 26625. Wednesday class activity number 26627.

Aug. 1 & 3  - Open Water Swim Training (Ages 18 & Older)

Shawnee Mission Park Beach, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., $10 per person, $12 nonresidents

Final open water sessions of 2023 - Looking to train for an upcoming triathlon or to change up your swim workout? JCPRD offers open water swim training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach. All swimmers should be able to swim 500 meters freestyle and have endurance to swim in open water conditions and must bring and wear their tow buoy float at all times while in the water. Lifeguard will be on duty. All participants must be pre-registered by 10 a.m. on the day of the training. A minimum number of participants must be registered or the practice will be canceled. If a participant is registered for a canceled practice date, a full refund will be given. Aug. 1 session activity number 26926 and Aug. 3 session activity number 26927.

Aug. 1-3 - Volleyball: New Century Fieldhouse Summer Camp (Ages 7-14)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Tuesday through Thursday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 3 sessions, $65 per person, $70 nonresidents

Get in the game by participating in this three-day summer break volleyball camp held at New Century Fieldhouse in Gardner, Kan. Girls and boys entering grades 3 - 8 can participate in the camp and will be split up into groups by grade and ability level as best as the coaches can. Coaches from KC Fire Volleyball Club will run the camp. Serving, passing, setting, hitting, fun drills, and games will all be covered. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. Activity number 29610. Aug. 2 - Exercise: Ageless Lifters (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Wednesdays, 1 to 1:50 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents

Engage each muscle group in your entire body workout. This full body workout is achieved through high repetition sets and non-cardio exercises. This class uses dumbbells and body weight exercises. Activity number 26721.

Aug. 2 - Alzheimer's Classes: Living with Alzheimer's - Younger Onset (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE

Learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer's and dementia; how to approach someone about memory concerns; importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. Presentations by the Alzheimer's Association. Activity number 26874.

Aug. 3 - Nature Outings: Flint Hills Discovery Center (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., $45 per person, $47 nonresidents

Travel to Manhattan, Kan. and enjoy a self-guided tour of the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of the Flint Hills. Experience over 10,000 square feet of interactive exhibits and temporary exhibitions. The group will have lunch together at a nearby restaurant. Activity number 26710.

Aug. 3 - Cards: Beginning Bridge (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 9 to 11 a.m., 8 sessions, $88 per person, $97 nonresidents

Get in on the biggest game in town! Learn the basics of bidding, scoring, and the play of the hand. Price includes Audrey Grant’s “Bidding in the 21st Century.” Activity number 31127.

Aug. 3 - Special Interest: Wits Workout (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 10 to 11:30 a.m., 4 sessions, $10 per person, $11 nonresidents

NEW! You are never too young or old to get started training your brain. Participants will take part in interactive activities designed to exercise the brain to maintain and enhance cognitive function and memory. A session will consist of a pen and paper activity and an educational topic on memory, brain health, or health and wellness. Program presented by K-State Extension. Activity number 26712.

Aug. 4 - deadline - play begins Aug. 27 or Sept. 17 - Volleyball NCF Summer for individuals and teams (Grades 3-8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sunday evenings, 7 sessions, $113 per person, $113 per individual or $680 per team

Teams will practice one night a week at New Century Fieldhouse, in addition to their games on Sunday evening. League registration includes a T-shirt, which will serve as the team uniform. Shorts, socks, knee pads, etc. will be the responsibility of each family. If you volunteer to coach and are chosen to be a head coach, your child will receive 50% off their registration fees. Aug. 4 deadline – Play begins Sept. 9 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Pee Wee Fall League (Ages 4-6)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Saturdays, 9 a.m. to Noon, 6 sessions, $68 per person (includes game day shirt)

The fall indoor pee wee league is designed for kids entering preschool and kindergarten. Teams meet on six Saturday mornings beginning Sept. 9 to practice for 20-minutes followed by a 30-minute game. Format is 4 v 4 with no goalie. Parent volunteers are the coaches and will serve as the official during the game. Parents who are chosen to coach must pass a background check and complete a volunteer form and will have their child's fee waived. For questions, call 913-826-2850. Activity number 31201.
 
Aug. 5 - Boating: Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail With Us! (Ages 18 & Older)

Shawnee Mission Park Marina Parking Lot, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, Noon to 1 p.m. FREE

All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join society members for lunch and sailing. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. Aug. 5 - Fishing: Overnight Saturdays after 11 p.m. (All Ages)

Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 11 p.m. - 5 a.m., permit fees vary

The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, trout permit if fishing for trout, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Aug. 5 - Exercise: Zumba Gold (Ages 50 & Older)
