Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

July 25 - Bridge Play (All Ages)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Mondays, 5 sessions, 6 to 8 p.m., $17 per person, $18 nonresidents

Beginner Bridge players join us. This is a place for all levels to come in and practice their play in a fun friendly environment. Activity number 21727.

July 25 - Martial Arts: Mixed Martial Arts (Ages 6-12)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Monday and Wednesday, 5 sessions, 5:30 - 6:20 p.m., $55 per person, $61 nonresidents

Traditional martial arts techniques taught with an emphasis on awareness based self-defense and anti-bullying. Improve discipline, focus, and self-confidence while strengthening the body and mind. Activity number 22635.

July 25-29 - Multi-Sport: Amazing Athletes (Ages 3-5)

Meadowbrook Park Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, , 10 to 10:45 a.m., 5 sessions, $98 per person, $108 nonresidents

Amazing Athletes uses a multi-sport program to introduce the fundamentals of 10 different sports in a non-competitive environment. Children in Amazing Athletes routinely gain greater confidence, learn to combine fitness with fun, and develop six key motor skills. Equipment provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes. July 26 - Special Interests: Climate Change - Environmental Issues (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., FREE

What is causing climate change? Learn about the scientific evidence that CO2 and temperature levels are rising, the impacts on ecosystems and on people, and solutions for the changing climate. Presented by K-State Research and Extension Master Naturalist of Johnson County. Activity number 22666.

July 25-28 - Soccer: JOCO Summer Soccer Camps (Ages 3- 5 & 6- 10)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 4 sessions, Monday through Thursday, times & fees vary

Puma FC coaches will be running this four-day camp over summer break. Basic soccer skills will be learned in a fun environment. Kids should wear shin guards and long socks as well as soccer cleats or tennis shoes. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt.  Camp for ages 3 to 5 runs 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. daily, $65 per person, activity number 22588. July 26 - Reading: Wanderlust Book Club - Clanlands: Whiskey, Warfare (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 2 to 3 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

Intertwine your love of travel and a good book with a travel-themed book club. Each month, enjoy the selected book from the list and conclude the month at the clubhouse with a group discussion on how it relates to your travel and how it may inspire your Wanderlust. This month’s book is “Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other” by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish. From their faithful camper van to boats, kayaks, bicycles, and motorbikes, join the authors, who are the stars of the television show “Outlander,” on a road trip with a difference, as the two Scotsmen explore a land of raw beauty, poetry, feuding, music, history, and warfare. Unlikely friends Sam and Graham begin their journey in the heart of Scotland at Glencoe - the site of a great massacre and major clan feud - and travel from there all the way to Inverness and Culloden battlefield, where along the way they experience adventure and a cast of highland characters. In this story of friendship, finding themselves, and whisky, they discover the complexity, rich history, and culture of their native country.  Activity number 21734. July 28 - Bingo: Recreation Celebration (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun, and 12 games of bingo. A variety of prizes will awarded including gift certificates. Space is limited, register early by calling 913-831-3359. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Activity number 21811.

July 29, 30, 31 and Aug. 3, 4, 5, & 6 - “The SpongeBob Musical” Rated PG

Theatre in the Park, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee (Note that the Renner Road Bridge over I-435 is not usable this summer, and the southbound exit ramp at 87th Street is also closed), 8:30 pm, Tickets are $10 (plus tax) for general admission, $6 (plus tax) for youth (Ages 4-10) Children 3 & under are FREE (but require a ticket)

Final show of TIP’s 2022 outdoor summer season- Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series! SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and all of Bikini Bottom face total annihilation - until a most unexpected hero rises to take center stage. The box office opens at 7 pm, gates open at 7:30 pm, show begins at 8:30 pm. Buy tickets on site or online.

July 29 - Adventure Walk: Cedar Niles Park (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., $18 per person, $20 nonresidents

Enjoy a self-paced walk along the newly-opened Cedar Niles Park in Johnson County. This park features streams, tree-lined paved trails, and diverse plant life. Please bring a sack lunch. Stop for a sweet treat on the way back. Activity number 21652.

July 30 - Boating: Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail With Us! (Ages 18 & Older)

Shawnee Mission Park Marina Parking Lot, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, Noon to 1 p.m. FREE

All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join us for an afternoon of lunch and sailing. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. Activity number 21528. If you are interested in watching or participating in the Sailing Society’s races, please call Nick Hockman at 913-268-5683 for more information.
