Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of June 24-July 1:

June 10 – Monday, June 19 – Juneteenth Walk and Read (All Ages)

Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park, 12500 W. 119th St., Overland Park, park open dawn to dusk, daily

The Johnson County Library and JCPRD invite the public to visit the Juneteenth Walk and Read at Stoll Park. This self-guided walk consists of a series of panel signs that provide an interactive reading experience for children and their parents or caregivers. Two stories, "Opal Lee and What it Means to Be Free: The True Story of the Grandmother of Juneteenth" by Alice Faye Duncan and illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo, and "Change Sings: A Children's Anthem" by Amanda Gorman and illustrated by Loren Long are featured. 

June 20 - Movies in the Park: “Lilo & Stitch” (Rated PG)

Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, $1 per person

2nd of 6 through Aug. 18 - A tale of a young girl's close encounter with the galaxy's most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly "dog," whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren't in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith, and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch's heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else. June 26 - Yoga: Yoga Beyond Basics (Ages 14 & Older)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Mondays, 6:30 to 7:20 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents

MODERATE INTENSITY: Take a deep dive in the yoga experience where we move a little faster, work deeper into our poses, and explore breathing practices more deeply! June 26-30 - Theatre: Hogwarts© Academy Session 2B (Ages 8-12)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., $225 per person, $250 nonresidents

Ever want to play quidditch? Ever want to find out which house you would be sorted in? Want to experiment with some potions and concoctions? Your kid can do it all in this camp filled with Harry Potter fun! Activity number 31116.

June 26-30 - TIP Mainstage: Technical Theatre Specialty – Scenic Design (Ages 14-18)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., 5 sessions, $225 per person, $250 nonresidents

This one-week camp will focus on the scenic design elements that create the physical space of a show and explore the scenic designers role on the directing team. Participants will dive deep into the design process for a show chosen by the group from options provided by the teaching artists. There will be whole group instruction followed by small group and individual hands-on experiences. Participants will have an opportunity to share their design with TIP staff in a mock design presentation! Activity number 26699.

June 26-30 – Discovery: Mad Science© - Advanced Robotics Camp (Ages 9-13)

Roeland Park Sports Dome, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, 5 sessions, $195 per person, $215 nonresidents)

Explore the science of robotics. Study gears and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Learn about artificial intelligence and how it is revolutionizing our world. Put all this knowledge to use when you build your very own robotic arm. Activity number 25642.

June 26-30 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Bike Adventure Camp (Ages 5-10)

Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #2, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, or Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for kids who are ready to crank out bike adventures and improve safe riding skills on wide multi-use trails and low traffic neighborhood streets. Riding adventures away from base camp will highlight with distances varying by ability level each day (children grouped by ability level)! Bike skills taught include: brake modulation, emergency braking, steering in control, riding in a group, riding up and down hills, traffic safety, and yielding to other trail users. Super fun on-the-bike and off-the-bike games and craft activities round out the week. This camp is all about safety and fun on two wheels! No training wheels allowed. June 26-30 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Mountain Bike Camp (Ages 5-10)

Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #2, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for beginner, intermediate, and advanced trail riders. Bike coaching includes: brake, modulation using front and back brakes, steering in control, looking ahead, bike body separation, ready position, riding in a group, front wheel lifts, climbing and descending safely, and yielding to other trail users. Off-the-bike activities include bike cleaning and maintenance, bike safety checks, and bike themed games and crafts. Operated by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who are known for their patient, compassionate, and fun teaching style. Children are grouped by ability level based on the Buddy Pegs Paw Rating System. Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25087.

June 26-30 - HPGC PGA Junior Golf Camp Advanced (Ages 12-17)

Heritage Park Golf Course, 16447 Constance St., Olathe, Monday through Friday, Noon to 4 p.m., 5 sessions, $450 per person

NEW! A junior golf camp at Heritage Park is a great avenue to learn the game of golf. Our camps are about two things - golf and fun. The instruction is directed by PGA Professionals to provide a supportive and safe environment for your children to improve their golf game. Students will be introduced to putting, chipping, full swing, and make use of our new Wee Links course. Our Advanced Camp is quite a bit more entailed. We teach golf’s etiquette, history, rules, and technique so your juniors have fun and get a great introduction to this life-long game! Activity number 26894.

June 27 - Cards: Bridge Workshops - Take Out Doubles (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 6 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

Become an in-demand partner with these bridge workshops. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Workshops include handouts to take home. Activity number 26897. See other upcoming Bridge Workshops.

June 27-30 - Buddy Pegs: Learn to Pedal (Ages 3-5)

Meadowbrook Park Grand Pavilion, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Tuesday through Friday, 5 to 6 p.m., 4 sessions, $120 per person, $132 nonresidents

Buddy Pegs certified coaches weave our unique Learn to Pedal curriculum into play-based challenges and games. Students learn the fundamentals of riding a bike without pedals (no training wheels) thanks to our no-pedal glide method of teaching. This helps develop the muscle memory and confidence needed to pedal independently. Once the class is pedaling and braking safely on their own it’s time to roll out and learn how to ride safely in a group, alongside other trail users. Each participant will expand his/her cycling knowledge, skills, and distance. The class culminates with a destination ride (parents welcome). Balance bike or training wheel riders are welcome! Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. No refunds one week prior to camp start date. Activity number 26808.

June 28 - Gymnastics: Ninja Clinic (Ages 6-12)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 12:30 to 2 p.m., $27 per person, $30 nonresidents

No matter their skill level, everyone can have a blast learning to be ninjas! Training will emphasize improving strength and agility through obstacle challenges and conditioning. Activity number 26011.

June 30-July 2 & July 5-8 - 13 at Theatre in the Park (Rated PG)

7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, 8:30 p.m., Tickets are $10 (plus tax) for general admission, $6 (plus tax) for youth (Ages 4-10), Children 3 & under are FREE (but require a ticket.)
