Johnson County Park and Recreation District Program Highlights 

Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of June 18-24:

June 17 - Family Kayak Lesson (Ages 10 & Older with an Adult)

Shawnee Mission Park Lake, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 9 to 10:30 a.m., $24 per person, $26 nonresidents

Learn the basics of flatwater kayaking in this introductory class featuring a combination of lecture and hands-on experience. The class is designed for beginners. Course topics include safety, equipment, and stroke techniques. Both parent and child must register and will have individual kayaks and life jackets. Basic swimming skills required. Advanced registration required. Instructor: Park Police Officer Josiah Gould. Activity number is 26492. Note that an 11 a.m. session on this date has already filled.

June 19-23 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Mountain Bike School (Ages 5-10)

Cedar Niles Park, 25117 W 119th St, Olathe, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for beginner, intermediate, and advanced trail riders. Bike coaching includes: brake, modulation using front and back brakes, steering in control, looking ahead, bike body separation, ready position, riding in a group, front wheel lifts, climbing and descending safely, and yielding to others trail users. Off-the-bike activities include bike cleaning and maintenance, bike safety checks, and bike themed games and crafts. Operated by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who are known for their patient, compassionate, and fun teaching style. Children are grouped by ability level based on the Buddy Pegs Paw Rating System. Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25080.

June 19-23 - Sports: Youth Triathlon Camp (Ages 11-14)

Shawnee Mission Park, Shelter #1, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 9 a.m. to Noon, $180 per person

Are you looking for something unique that empowers, develops character and inspires your kids? Then join Ironman World Championship Athlete & Coach, Josh Wolf and USA Triathlon Race Director Katy Renner for our popular youth triathlon camp! Camp will focus on the fundamentals of swimming, biking, and running. Athletes must bring their own bike, helmet, and gear for each sport. June 20-22 - Basketball: Okun June Summer Break Camp - (Grades K-3, Grades 4-8)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Thursday, times vary, $60 per person, $66 nonresidents

Get in the game with JCPRD basketball camps at Okun Fieldhouse! Players will participate in drills, group activities, and scrimmages offering group and one-on-one instruction. Players will practice shooting, passing, ball handling, offense and defense. Grades K-3 meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Activity Number 30114. June 20-22 - Volleyball: Okun June Summer Break Camp (Grades 3-8)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday - Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to Noon, 3 sessions, $65 per person, $72 nonresidents

Get some experience with Coach Gwenn Pike! Practice serving, passing, setting, and hitting in small group drills and scrimmage-like play. Participants will be divided into groups based on age and ability. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt. For more information please visit JCPRD.com/youthsports. Activity number 30105.

June 20-23 - HPGC PGA Junior Golf Camps (Ages 7-13)

Heritage Park Golf Course, 16447 Contance St., Olathe, Tuesday through Friday, 9 to 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4 sessions, $150 per person

NEW! A junior golf camp at Heritage Park is a great avenue to learn the game of golf. Our camps are about two things—golf and fun. The instruction is directed by PGA Professionals to provide a supportive and safe environment for your children to improve their golf game. Students will be introduced to putting, chipping, full swing, and make use of our new Wee Links course. Our camps are a golf enrichment program designed for the junior golfer. We welcome boys and girls of all athletic abilities, golf experience, and competitive desire. Each junior enrolled in our camps is warmly and sincerely welcomed and in great hands. June 20-23 - Sports: Cheerleading Camp (Ages 5-12)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m., 4 sessions, $145 per person, $160 nonresidents

This class teaches young athletes the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the home team! Each participant will learn cheers, proper hand/body movements and jumping techniques. There is no stunting, just a big focus on fun while each cheerleader learns important life skills such as teamwork and leadership. June 21 - Yoga: Yoga (Ages 14 & Older)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., 6 sessions, $48 per person, $53 nonresidents,

LOW INTENSITY: Improve circulation, regulate your metabolism, and increase flexibility and coordination with this Yoga class. You will lengthen your muscles while increasing both muscle and bone density. Yoga participants of all levels are welcome. Join us for this class and find out all the benefits of yoga in your life. June 21 - Exercise: Ageless Lifters (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Wednesdays, 1 to 1:50 p.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents

Engage each muscle group in your entire body workout. This full body workout is achieved through high repetition sets and non-cardio exercises. This class uses dumbbells and body weight exercises. Activity number 26720.

June 24 - Exercise: Zumba® Gold (Ages 50 & Older)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Saturdays, 9 to 9:50 a.m., 5 sessions, $40 per person, $44 nonresidents

MODERATE INTENSITY: Perfect for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class. Easy-to-follow choreography focuses on balance, range of motion, coordination, and fun! Want to try a class before committing to the entire session? Call for details 913-826-3160. Activity number 26630.
