Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Dec. 10:16:

Dec. 9, 16 - (2 separate sessions) Art: Seussical Art (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 1 to 2 p.m., $5 per person

Make your own mini version of our bird girl puppets before you see Theatre in the Park's production of “Seussical The Musical” indoors at The Black Box Theater, located at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center. We’ll provide the supplies; you provide the creativity. Dec. 9 session, activity number 31050. Dec. 16 session, activity number 31051.

Dec. 11, 15 - (2 separate events) Special Event: Candy Cane Hunt (Ages 5 and under with Parent or Guardian)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 10:30 a.m. to noon, $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

Dec. 12 : Concert: New Horizons Band Concert Series (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 8 p.m., FREE

Clear your calendars and don’t miss these performances by members of the New Horizons Band as they make beautiful music together. This top:notch entertainment is FREE of charge. No registration required! Activity number 32079.

Dec. 12 : Special Interest: The 3 B’s to Build a Better Body & Mind (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10 to 11 a.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

Do you know the ingredients to building a better body and mind? In this one:hour session you will learn about the importance of good nutrition, the benefits of moving your body, and the negative impact of stress on your health. But more importantly, you will learn how to make meaningful and manageable changes to begin to build your better body and mind. Building a better body and mind starts with the 3 B’s: building a better meal, boosting physical activity, and balancing stress. This class is presented by the K:State Research and Extension Office. Dec. 13 : Museum: Retro Storytime : “Frosty the Snow Man” (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members

Everyone’s favorite snowman was born in 1950 as the subject of a record, and soon after appeared in many forms, including a Little Golden Book! Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All:Electric House! Dec. 13 : Holiday Event: Jingle Mingle (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $15 per person, $16 nonresidents

Let’s have a little fun this holiday season! Enjoy an afternoon of fun holiday games, spirited tunes, and festive treats. Don’t forget to bring an item from home you would like to re:gift for the white elephant exchange. Activity number 32083.

Dec. 15 : Preschool: Holly Jolly Storytime (Ages 2:5 with an Adult )

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., 10 to 11 a.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents

Join staff at Roeland Park for a jolly good story while decorating a tasty treat! Activity number 32082.

Dec. 15 : Family Fun: Family Bingo : Holiday B:I:N:G:HO:HO:HO (All Ages)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 5:30 to 7 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents, 20% discount for additional participants

Looking for a fun, family event during winter break? Let’s play everybody’s favorite game B:I:N:G:O with a holiday twist! We’ll be singing and laughing all the way! Pizza dinner served at 5:30 p.m., bingo to follow. Activity number 32086. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo.

Dec. 15 : Dance: Drop in and Dance! Swing Night (Ages 14 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 9 p.m., $15 per person, $16.50 nonresidents

Each class in this Drop in and Dance series running through mid:December will focus on a different genre, including swing, tap, belly dancing, and musical theatre. In this Swing Class, you’ll learn the basic steps and rhythms of this classic American dance style, including the Lindy Hop and Charleston in a fun and welcoming environment! Activity number 32182
