A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Oct. 3 - Martial Arts: Mixed Martial Arts (Ages 6-12)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., 6 sessions, $66 per person, $72 nonresidents

Traditional martial arts techniques taught with an emphasis on awareness based self-defense and anti-bullying. Improve discipline, focus, and self-confidence while strengthening the body and mind. Activity number 23163.

Oct. 3 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older

Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy monthly session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices.  Activity number 23493. Oct. 3 - Concert: New Horizons Band Concert Series (All Ages)

Oct. 3, 5 - Buddy Pegs: Learn to Pedal (Ages 3-5 and 5-10)

Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, times, prices, and locations within the park vary (see below), 4 sessions

NEW!  Buddy Pegs certified coaches weave our unique Learn to Pedal curriculum into play-based challenges and games. Students learn the fundamentals of riding a bike without pedals (no training wheels) thanks to our no-pedal glide method of teaching. This helps develop the muscle memory and confidence needed to pedal independently. Once the class is pedaling and braking safely on their own it’s time to roll out and learn how to ride safely in a group, alongside other trail users. Each participant will expand his/her cycling knowledge, skills, and distance. The class culminates with a destination ride (parents welcome). Balance bike or training wheel riders are welcome! Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Monday session for ages 5 to 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 3 at Shelter #3, $120 per person, $132 nonresidents, activity number 23678. Oct. 3 - Buddy Pegs: Adventure Bike Club (Ages 5-10)

Meadowbrook Park Grand Pavilion, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Mondays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., 4 sessions, $90 per person, $99 nonresidents 

NEW!  Our Adventure Bike Programs are perfect for kids who are rolling along on two wheels, without training wheels. Your young rider will instantly gain more confidence while learning/improving their riding skills, while more advanced riders will develop critical skills that provide them with the confidence they need to excel and be safe riders. Buddy Pegs coaches will form small, multi-age groups, based on Buddy Pegs ability levels (PAW) so each rider is appropriately and safely challenged. There are no training wheels in this class, and participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. This class is offered for PAW levels 2, 3, 4. Activity number 23680.

Oct. 3  - Code Ninjas: Code a Robot in Minecraft® (Ages 7-10)

Attention Minecraft® masters! Learn how to use code to control a virtual robot in Minecraft®. You can even program it to complete all of the boring tasks in Minecraft® for you…that’s right! Teach your robots to dig, farm, build, and more. Activity number 23668.

Oct. 3 - Code Ninjas: Intro to Roblox® Development (Ages 9-14)

If you love Roblox® and want to get started with building your own games, this camp is for you! You will learn the basics of game building in your own 3D Roblox® worlds. No experience required. Activity number 23669.

Oct. 4 - Gardening: Winterize Your Garden (Ages 50 & Older)

Your garden looks amazing and here comes Mr. ugly winter to ruin your view. Join a K-State Extension Office Master Gardener to learn all the winter tricks to get those beautiful plants back next year! Activity number 23079.

Oct. 4 - Art: Beginning Drawing (Ages 16 & Older)

Want to learn the basics of drawing or just work on sharpening your current skills? Whether you want to upgrade your journaling, improve the foundational drawings for your paintings, or just sketch for fun; this class will walk you through the basic aspects of drawing. Activity number 23008.

Oct. 5 - Dance: Ballroom Dancing (Ages 16 & Older)

Oct. 5, 19 - Preschool Storytime: Animal Tales (Ages 2-6 with an Adult)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $3 per person

Join a park naturalist for animal stories and surprises geared for preschool age children. Come listen, learn, and meet a special animal friend every time. Oct. 5 - Yoga: Rise and Shine Yoga (Ages 16 & Older)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, Wednesdays, 6 to 7 a.m., 4 sessions, $32 per person, $35 nonresidents

Start your day with an invigorating yoga practice at Ernie Miller Nature Center. This is yoga for anybody. All are welcome, no experience necessary! This class will focus on gentle stretching, serenity, and rejuvenation, and will be tailored to individual abilities. Please bring your mat to class. Oct. 5 - Meadowbrook Walkers (Ages 50 & Older)

Oct. 5 - Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walk (Ages 1-4 with an Adult)

Oct. 6 - Dance: Belly Dancing (Ages 16 & Older)

Join us for this low-impact, body-positivity-style dance class! Learn the fundamentals of this eastern style of dance all while getting low to moderate exercise in. Activity number 22645.

Oct. 6 - Games: Special Event Chili Bingo (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., $17 per person, $19 nonresidents

Celebrate the changing of the seasons meeting new friends over a mild chili, salad, and cinnamon roll dinner - it’s a Kansas thing! 12 games of bingo included. Prizes can range from gift cards to gift baskets. Cost of admission covers snacks and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Please register by Sept. 23. Oct. 7 - Gary L. Haller Memorial Golf Tournament (Ages 18 & Older)

Tomahawk Hills Golf Course, 17501 Midland Dr., Shawnee, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $100 for individuals and $400 for teams of four

This memorial golf tournament celebrates the life and accomplishments of JCPRD’s former director and raises funds for the foundation that continues to support his vision. Haller served as JCPRD’s director from August 1974 until he retired in March 2001. He passed away in December 2020. Check-in for the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration includes breakfast pastries, juice and coffee at check-in, green fees, cart, on-course refreshments, swag bag, catered lunch, range balls, and prizes. Oct. 7 - Art: Clay Creations (Ages 3-7 with an Adult)

Come get creative and explore clay. Students will get the opportunity to hand-build with clay and make one ceramics piece to be fired. Students will need an adult to attend class with them. Activity number 22790.

Oct. 7 deadline for vendors for Oct. 28 JamBOOree event Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm Road, Olathe, 5 to 8 p.m., FREE 12x12 booths available

Be a part of the most BOO-tastic family event in the county! This event will spotlight your company, business, or organization to families enjoying trick-or-treating, photo opportunities, animals from Ernie Miller Nature Center, and so much more. The event received rave reviews last year, hosting over 1,200 participants in just three hours! This year, for even more fun, we have added a movie for everyone at sunset. This is a free event that encourages participants to make a donation to The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County (TPRFJC) to support the Access + Equity for All Scholarship Fund. Vendors are encouraged to decorate their space, dress in costume, and provide candy or kid-friendly giveaways for participants. The JCPRD JamBOOree is a safe, family-friendly event for all ages. Oct. 7 deadline - games begin week of Oct. 30 - Volleyball: New Century Fieldhouse Fall II (Grades 3 - 8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 6 Sunday games, $111 per individual or $670 per team

Teams will play doubleheaders over six Sundays with no games on Nov. 27. Individual registration includes a game day T-shirt, and a weekly 60-minute practice session. Team registration does not. Teams can rent court space from JCPRD at a discounted rate for practices and can also purchase shirts through the league if they prefer. Parents who volunteer to coach and are selected as a head coach will receive 50% off their child’s registration fees. Oct. 8 - Art: Drawing Animals - LIVE! (Ages 8-15)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe, 10 a.m. to Noon., $25 per person, $27.50 nonresidents

3rd of 4 - Learn to draw animals with the help of our teaching artists and our animal ambassadors from Ernie Miller Nature Center. Each drawing class will feature one of our animal friends acting as a live model. Our teaching artist will be there to guide you through the process of sketching and drawing an animal who shifts and moves. No experience needed, all supplies included. This drawing series features four different classes with four different animals, sign up for one or all four! This session will feature a snake.  Activity number 23475. Oct. 8 - Boating: Intermediate Evening Kayak Excursion (Ages 18 & Older)

Shawnee Mission Park Lake, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $24 per person, $26 nonresidents

Enjoy the evening on the water as we kayak around Shawnee Mission Park Lake. Hear the croaks and splash of frogs, the hooting of owls, and view the park from a different perspective.
