Boston, MA - Over the weekend, Representative Marcus Vaughn (R-Norfolk) informed residents that the Healey-Driscoll Administration decided to house 450 migrants in the closed Bay State Correctional Center. With Norfolk’s population standing at around 11,000 and its school system accommodating just over 1,000 students, the news poses a significant challenge. Norfolk public schools already grapple to serve the existing student population, and the sudden influx of additional students threatens to overwhelm the system, detrimentally affecting the education of Norfolk children.

MassGOP Chairwoman, Amy Carnevale, commented on the situation stating, “What we’re witnessing is the Healey-Driscoll Administration effectively steamrolling communities, imposing additional burdens without community consent or state-level support. Norfolk, being a small town, simply cannot accommodate 450 migrants. What’s worse, is Norfolk’s own town moderator has reportedly been attempting to block public feedback in the upcoming annual meeting. It’s unacceptable.”

Representative Vaughn expressed his concern regarding the decision made by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, stating, “The Norfolk community is in dismay over the decision to house these migrants in our small town. Our schools are already financially strained, and this move will disproportionately impact our children. It’s not right to force our children to sacrifice their education for a problem they played no part in creating. Had the Democratic supermajority on Beacon Hill heeded the amendments proposed by my colleagues and me, we wouldn’t be incentivizing migrants to enter the Commonwealth, and Norfolk’s children wouldn’t be bearing this burden.”
