The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) today shares the following statement about the placement of a statue honoring Rev. Billy Graham at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, May 16.

“The North Carolina Republican Party is pleased to see the statue of Rev. Billy Graham formally installed in the U.S. Capitol,” said NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons. “We are proud to see a man of faith, who traveled the world to preach the Gospel of God's Son Jesus Christ, and loved his North Carolina home, honored in our nation’s capital.”

“A special thanks goes to Sens. Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, along with the North Carolina Congressional delegation, for their work expediting approval and installation of this statue we can proudly show the world,” Simmons added.

Additional background:

Each state is authorized to designate “two statues of notable citizens for display in the United States Capitol.”

A state is allowed to replace a statue by requesting the approval of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress.

In 2015, the N.C. General Assembly approved a request to the JCL to approve the replacement of the statue of Charles Aycock with the Reverend William Franklin “Billy” Graham, Jr.

A statue of Rev. Graham became eligible for placement at the U.S. Capitol after his death in 2018.
