Bergen Family Center supports, strengthens and enriches family life through innovative programs and quality services.

Bergen Family Center, founded in 1898, is Bergen County's oldest continuously operating family service agency. Originally an organization of boys clubs under the aegis of the Woman's Club of Englewood; a day nursery was added by 1900, launching a total family-supportive mission now over a century old. Through the years the agency operated under a number of different names and in varied locations, merged with other civic organizations, and emerged in the 1920's as the Social Service Federation.

During the mid-twentieth century, the clinical counseling and family advocacy departments spun off into an independent entity headquartered in Hackensack known as Family Service of Bergen County. The Social Service Federation continued in Englewood providing neighborhood-based programming on the settlement house model while the counseling program in Hackensack developed into a traditional family service agency.

In 1997, the two organizations reunited, forming Family and Social Service Federation, which in early 2002 became Bergen Family Center, better reflecting the totality of our commitment to the diverse needs of Bergen families.
