Charlevoix Assembly of God Church

05291 M-66 North Street

History:

On January 2, 1948 the first service of the Assembly of God Church in Charlevoix was held at the home of Brother and Sister Reynolds Warner, with 19 others in attendance. They believed that God wanted to have a Pentecostal church in Charlevoix. It wasn't long before this group outgrew their facilities.

On March 27, 1949 the people gathered for a groundbreaking service at the property on East Upright Street. A little over a year later, on May 25, 1950, the first service was held in the new church building.

God continued to bless through the leadership of various pastors, the congregation continued to grow and it soon became evident that more room was needed. In May 1967, it was decided to build a fellowship hall and educational unit, and to remodel the basement of the existing church. Groundbreaking for the new 44' x 48' addition was held in July 1967. On May 11, 1969 Rev. C.L. Strom officiated the dedication of these new facilities.

The congregation continued to grow and it was felt that one day a site would be needed for a new church. On June 9, 1976 the church membership voted to purchase 80 acres on M-66. Shortly afterwards, a discussion was held with Hoskins Manufacturing concerning the purchase of 8 acres of their land that adjoined the new church property. On November 9, 1976, Mr. John Lachman of Hoskins Manufacturing, gave this land as a gift to the church.

A development committee was commissioned in November 1978 to study the feasibility of enlarging the existing church or building a new church. After reviewing the report of the committee, the membership overwhelmingly voted to build a new church and the property on M-66 was dedicated on April 17, 1977.

The building committee of Pastor Schorsch, Dawson Way, Bob Klooster, Jerry Drost, Mike Bales, Dale Boss, Ivan Byard, Eugene Drost, Wayne Boss, Lorrie Way, Steve Schaible, Hilliard Shackford, and Jerry Balch were commissioned to begin their work. Their plans included the unique features of a combination fellowship hall/gymnasium, an area for potential day care facilities with offices and the use of chairs instead of pews.

On September 11, 1977 groundbreaking services were held and excavation began shortly after. By December, the exterior was almost complete and work on the interior wall began. On April 16, 1978, the first service was held in the new building with Willie Murphy as the guest speaker. The first baptismal service was held on Sunday evening, April 30, 1978 for 14 people.
