Elmhurst Lions Club
The Elmhurst Lions is dedicated to raising funds that benefit local children and adults with vision and hearing needs.
The Elmhurst Noon Lions Club was originally chartered on June 7, 1923, the initial club had fifty members; this club was cancelled in 1936, and re-organized in September 1940 as a new club, sponsored by the Lions Club of Maywood. In June 2009, the Noon Club and the Evening Club merged. The motto of Lions Clubs International is "We Serve" and the Elmhurst Lions Club has excelled in this endeavor by serving many families in need in our Community, State and the Nation.
Since 1917, Lions have served the world's population through hard work and commitment to make a difference in the lives of people everywhere. The International Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago businessman Melvin Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large. Currently with 1.35 million members serving in more than 45,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become her "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" during the association's 1925 international convention. Lions are also involved in a variety of other activities to improve their communities and help people in need, such as assisting the hearing impaired, and working with diabetes awareness and education, environmental projects and youth programs.
Today the Elmhurst Lions Club maintains a membership of approximately fifty members and meets weekly on Monday's at 12:15 at Angelo?s Restaurant for our lunch business meeting.
Our annual fundraisers include Candy Day in early October, Candy Day is the premiere fundraiser for the services & programs provided to the hearing & visually impaired in Illinois. This event alone raises over 50% of the total operating funds for the Lions of Illinois Foundation. Through these donations the Lions of Illinois Foundation & The Elmhurst Lions are able to serve in excess of 18,000 men, women, & children each year. Our Reverse Rafffle held at the end of summer utilizes the proceeds to benefit Sight First II - World Wide Vision Program. The mission of the Sight First II program is to build comprehensive eye care systems to fight the major causes of blindness and provide care for the blind or visually impaired
In addition, for over 20 years our Pizza Party in March is a widely attended family event, and not only is a favorite in the area, but is a chance for the community, past and present, to reconnect to their Elmhurst roots for an evening of fun and fellowship. In early spring our focus is also on our Sight and Sound Sweepstakes. Funds generated by the annual Lions of Illinois Foundation Sight and Sound Sweepstakes, our 2nd largest fundraiser, provides operating monies for the Lions approved programs and services of our Foundation. Fall also brings Halloween and our Family Fun Fest and Pumpkin Patch at the Abbey Leisure Center in late October. You can always find the members of the Elmhurst Noon Lions Club working hard to help others.
