About Us:

First Baptist Church of Westbrook was founded in 1890 by Brother J. C. Burkett, pastor of Colorado City Baptist Church. Services were held in the one room schoolhouse located at the cemetery. This Building served as schoolhouse and church. the newly organized church met for the preaching once a month.

Among the eight to ten charter members were Mrs. Petty, Mrs Joe Bell, Granny Bell, and Mrs Thorberry. Due to the loss of records, there is no way of knowing who the other were

Membership increased and a  half-time pastor was called. In 1902, a new church building was erected on land north of the cemetery. Five years later, this building was moved into Westbrook, west of the present bundling

Oil was discovered north of Westbrook in 1920, and there was a great influx of people. During this time, Sunday school attendance reached 403. A tabernacle was built and used as a place of worship for several years. The little church was sold to Oak Street Baptist Church in Colorado City.

Plans were formulated for a more permanent type of building in 1939. After World War II, the tabernacle was torn down, and the lumber used in the construction of an auditorium. The new auditorium was erected in 1947. Later the education building was added to the back of the auditorium. In 1950, a dedication service was held and the note burned.

Throughout the years, many things have been done to add to the beauty and comfort of the present building. The installation of stained glass windows, pews, paneling, carpeting of he sanctuary, central heat and air conditioning are among the additions.
