Liberty Senior Activity Center
About Us :
Liberty County Project on Aging, Inc. (dba Liberty Senior Activity Center) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing south Liberty County seniors with meals, recreation and transportation services. While we do get some much-needed support from the County of Liberty, we receive the bulk of our funding from State & Federal sources such as Texas Department of Aged & Disabled Services (DADS, formerly TDHS) as well as private contributions.
In the late 70’s, Bill Mearns began organizing a small group of seniors who met a few days each week at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Lakeland Drive. Mr. Mearns would provide coffee and donuts and the group would play dominoes and cards and enjoy fellowship with friends their own ages. As word of the group spread, their numbers grew and they started meeting (5) days a week. Mr. Mearns began going to the Chicken Shack each day to pick up lunch for them and it was a big hit.
In 1984, the group had grown in popularity to the point where they decided to officially organize. Articles of Association were drafted and a Board of Directors was appointed. This allowed the group to begin contracting with Houston-Galveston Area Council to receive State and Federal funding. LCPA used the funds to open a kitchen to cook a well-balanced meal for the seniors and soon began delivering meals to homebound residents.
Soon, the agency was serving 35 – 45 seniors each day and the homebound service had grown as well. By 1987, LCPA had outgrown the KC Hall and the Center moved to its new home on Beaumont Avenue. The leased building was dubbed the Bill Mearns Community Center. In 1988, Articles of Incorporation were filed with the State of Texas.
In 1994, our agency secured a loan from USDA Rural Development to purchase and remodel the old Liberty Lanes bowling alley building to give the senior citizens of South Liberty County a permanent home for their Center. Within weeks of the purchase, the flood of 1994 caused significant damage to the building and the project faced more than 18 months of delays. Finally, in March of ’97, the renovations were completed and we moved to our present home at 2000 Panther Lane.
