In 1986, the Union City Society for Historic Preservation acquired the Hammond House to serve as a focal point for the preservation of local artifacts and written history.
This stately Revival structure was one of the first homes in Union City. It was built over a century and a half ago by Deacon Chester Hammond who came west from Smyra County, New York in 1836. The extensive restoration of the Hammond House has been realized through the generous support of local alumns, organizations, businesses and individuals. Members of the society have done all the actual restoration.
The museum has a large collection of household furnishings, clothing and memorabilia from local businesses. Only items that relate to the history of the Union City area, including Sherwood and Burlington, are accepted.
Funds to operate the museum come from memberships and fund-raising events, such as our well-known home tours. The museum is also available for small gatherings for a small fee.
